Back on the road again. We loved the beautiful scenery! My little camera doesn't even begin to do it justice!
When we left Medicine Lodge, we were still headed for lunch in Sun City, however, the back roads took us longer and we decided we couldn't wait for lunch. So we stopped in another little town, Kiowa, and decided that we'd get pie in Sun City. We decided to have lunch at a cafe called Sideline and then visit the Kiowa Historical Museum, which reportedly had the Carry Nation hatchet.
The museum is housed in an old firehouse.
The "docent" was a very hard-of-hearing "older" gentleman, who didn't have many answers to our questions, so these are some of the things we discovered.
We thought this was part of the old jail, now a wall for hanging photos.
Before calculators and computers ... there were adding machines and typewriters! :)
During the Cold War, Civil Defense would stockpile foodstuffs in case of emergency. Can't imagine what these "Survival Crackers" would be like!
World War I army uniforms for soldiers and women in the WAC.
And here it is, a display on Carrie Nation (her name was spelled differently!) BUT, alas, no hatchet. The "docent" didn't know anything about a hatchet, and we couldn't really be sure he heard what we were asking.
Back on the road again ... ready for that pie!
This is what gypsum looks like in its raw state. It is really rather soft and when you chip it against another rock it leaves a white powdery mark. I remember putting gypsym in my California vegetable garden, as a way to break up the soil.
Still winding our way to Sun City.
