California Visitors! - Part 1

Jeremy, Renee, and Maddie came for a delightful one week visit!

At 16 months, Maddie repeats every word you say, can say a few short sentences, and has a very sweet disposition. What a joy she was - even though she had an ear infection, sinus infection and respiratory infection when she came! Talk about a little trooper!!! Oh, and mom and dad, are pretty special, too!

Maddie loves to help in the kitchen! When she saw me at the sink, she said, "helping, helping". So out came the stool and we went to work - happily so! We had 11 for dinner every night except for the night Brett had a meeting, so dinner time was very fun and very busy! :)

You should have seen the look on her face when her cousins, Moira, Audrey, Isabel, and Maeve, walked in! She had the biggest "Oh!" expression and a big smile. She could say each of their names very quickly. She also recognized the photos on the fridge of her other Dewey cousins. Pretty smart little girl - and very loved by all!

No family gathering is complete without Papa playing the piano. How she loved to join in.

We played outside in the rock garden, finding rocks of different shapes, colors, and sizes.

And then the rain came so it was inside for four days! More piano music!

Playing with Grandma's toy box and lots of coloring.

Wearing funny old hats.

A fun place to hang out was the rocker in Grandma's office.

Or better yet, were cuddles and books with Mommie!

A break in the rain allowed the chance for a drive up to Lindsborg, a small Swedish community "up the road". What Dewey doesn't love ice cream!

Lindsborg is known for the iconic Swedish Dala horse. There are several decorated ones along Main Street.

The first family vacation photo of Jeremy, Renee, and Maddie. Who would think it would be in Lindsborg, KS!!??

Happy Birthday Katelyn!

Katelyn Joy is 12 years old today! This little brown-eyed beauty is a bundle of joy! She plays soccer, does gymnastics, loves to cook and bake. You would have loved her very delicious turtle pie for Thanksgiving!

Katelyn was so excited to recently learn that she was accepted at Oaks Christian Middle School next school year! We are so proud of this achievement and know she'll do very well. Way to go, Kate!!!

Katelyn, I will always pray for you! As you go through middle school and then high school, I pray this verse for you ...

"...let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven."
Matthew 5:16

Love you!!!

Today is our 47th wedding anniversary! My how time flies!!! It's been a good 47! Three precious sons, three lovely daughters-in-love, 10 wonderful grandchildren! Our quiver is full!

We've been blessed to have a large, loving, extended family and many wonderful friends in our lives. Friends from our careers, friends across the country from our travels, friends from churches and neighborhoods in California and Kansas. Truly God has poured bountiful blessings upon our lives. Another blessing is the privilege to travel a lot the last several years. So here are just a few (of many!!) highlights.

2004 - Thailand

2005 - Zion National Park

2005 - Branson - Celebrating our 40th

2005 - Italy - Pt. Vecchio - Florence

Gardening!

It's so good to be able to get outside to do some gardening!!! We spent about four hours Saturday morning trimming and cleaning out rose bushes. They were already beginning to leaf out due to the warm days we've had. We were pretty aggressive cutting out dead wood, shaping and generally enjoying working on the project together!

You must know that gardening during the month of March in Kansas isn't anything like gardening during the month of March in California! My legs were freezing in my Cali gardening pants! I had FOUR top layers on and was still cold! It's all about the WIND!

Now it's on cutting back the prairie grasses and to pulling weeds. How do those weeds even think about growing when it's cold out???!!

It was a Party!

We had a fun party for Esther's birthday. She brought "Cat in the Hat" hats that she got for her class since Friday was also Dr. Seuss's birthday.

Did we look like dorks???? Definitely! Did we have fun???? Definitely!

The kids - and Esther - were so excited when she opened her gifts! Brett got tickets for all of us to see "The Lorax".

So we had cake and ice cream and off we went to the movie - hats and all. When we walked into the theater, the attendant said, "Well I can tell which movie you're going to see. We just had another group come in with hats like that". We told him they were our kids. Mo was too embarrassed to wear hers. Afraid she'd see a friend, which she did. It's THE AGE.

Such a fun night!!

Happy Birthday Esther!

Today is Esther's birthday. She shares it with Dr. Seuss and so it is always a celebration in her classroom.

She's the perfect wife for Brett, a wonderful mother to her four girls, and an outstanding - make that "distinguished" elementary school teacher. When she's not fulfilling one of these roles, she may also be found teaching Sunday school or VBS (in the summer), and being a friend to many. We are proud to call her "daughter-in-love"!

She embodies these verses!

"She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her."
Proverbs 31:26-29
