The Great Escape - 2011 - Part 1

Several months ago, Rich began planning a summer road trip. It would become The Great Escape - from the brutal Kansas heat!

Our dear friends from Oregon, Larry and Elaine, flew one way to Wichita, and then the plan was to road trip to Colorado, Utah, Lake Tahoe, and return them home. By the time we returned home, we traveled nearly three weeks and over 4,000 miles. It was FABULOUS!!

We had dinner with Brett, Esther and girls, and spent another day here at home before heading off to Ft. Collins, CO.

Leaving the sunflowers of Kansas, it was to be 114 degrees at home! By the time of this writing there have been 40+ days of triple-digit heat. To say we were at our wit's end with it is an understatement!

We enthusiastically watched the temp drop as we headed west! By the time we neared "The Fort", it was 74 degrees - at 4:23 pm. What a relief!

We were really taken with the changing cloud formations as we traveled. Gorgeous!

Our first stop was two nights with more friends, Carey and Nancy! We basked in the coolness of their lovely patio and backyard. I actually put on a sweater! Nancy prepared a lovely dinner for us. She's a great cook!

It's become tradition in our visits with Carey and Nancy that breakfast on our first morning is at Lucille's Cajun Cafe. It never disappoints.

Another tradition is a shopping trip in their store, The Cupboard. Elaine has heard me talk about this store on many occasions and she really looked forward to shopping. Let's just say that our purchases were more than we had room for in our already fully packed vehicle, so packages were shipped home! For my local readers, we purchased a Keurig coffee maker! Bible study and Community Life groups can look forward to that.

This is the display that greets customers at the front door.

More gorgeous shelves!

I've blogged before about the All American Selection Trial Gardens at Colorado State Univ. We never tire of walking through the rows of gorgeous flowers. The colors are simply brilliant!

The next day we left for Estes Park and Steamboat Springs, CO. Come along with us! There's LOTS of gorgeous country to be seen!

  2. Ooohhh....a Keurig :) I've been wanting one of those....I might have to swing by your home sometime and have a cup :) I'll follow your travels as well, Carolyn....I always enjoy your's and Rich's travels....something Marc and I hope to "copy" someday once we don't have children at home anymore (but don't worry -- I definitely enjoy this stage of life)
