August 11 was Rich's birthday!
There's a great restaurant at the ground level of the Marriott called "Fire and Ice". We went there for a very late lunch. It's such a cool place! You begin by serving yourself salad. Then selecting your meat, veggies, starch, cooking sauces - all in bowls on ice in a very cool room. Meats ranged from tilapia (delicious!), mussels, sirloin strips, sausage, slab bacon and more; veggies were things like, artichoke hearts, bean sprouts, shredded carrots, pea pods, broccolli, and more, and starches like Udon noodles, pasta, rice. Sauces were hot, sweet, spicy, and many combinations of all. After your bowl is piled high, you take it to the tappan grill and the chef lines each order from the center of grill out to edge. The chef puts on quite a show demonstrating his knife skills. He told Rick that during ski season the four chefs can EACH earn up to $500/day in TIPS. People are lined up out the door!
All of us plus Ken and Shannon's grandson, Travis. Ken and Shannon - and their children - have a home within an hour or so of Tahoe and so some of their kids and grandkids came to see them. K&S have been traveling close to a year, so their kids were very excited to have them close to home.
After cake and ice cream we introduced R&K and K&S to the game of Contract Gin. It's my favorite card game. Very challenging, you have to think but it's really "all in the cards", and you NEVER know who's going to win until the game is over. Here Janet lays down her hand. It looks as though Larry can't believe his eyes at her cards. Must have been what he was trying to get!
Look at the wad of cards Rich is holding - which is VERY typical. He and Larry really had to "check her out" to be sure everything was correct.
And then, a little silliness!
How goofy can one be, taking a hand in the game, chewing on a pretzel rod?!?!?
Our last day. We said good-bye to Rick and Janet and Ken and Shannon. I cried! Rich and Larry went to a movie. Elaine and I each took a book and went to find a quiet place to read at the pool.
Peeking out from my umbrella - this was my view! Ahhh!
We had such a marvelous week. The weather couldn't have been more beautiful, 70s-80s during day, dipped down into 30s-40s at night. It wasn't restful in the "lounging" sense, as we very busy every day, but what great fun we had with such dear souls! It truly was a balm for our spirits!
The next day we would depart for Larry and Elaine's home in Oregon, taking the backroads. More gorgeous scenery to come!
